How Many Russian Troops Have Died in the Ukraine War?

Ukraine’s Defence Ministry has stated that approximately 1,425,990 Russian military personnel have become casualties since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022. This figure includes 1,370 personnel reported as casualties in the 24 hours up to Friday (17 July). The data was released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Kyiv also claims Russia has lost thousands of units of military equipment, including 12,124 tanks, 24,946 armoured fighting vehicles, 46,084 artillery systems, 19,043 multiple launch rocket systems, and 1,496 air defence systems. Additionally, Ukraine records Russian losses as including 437 aircraft, 354 helicopters, 412,884 drones, 1,932 ground robotic systems, 34 ships and boats, and two submarines. The Ukrainian General Staff stressed that these figures are estimates and are continuously updated. Kyiv has not disclosed its own military losses, citing operational secrecy. Estimates from independent Western institutions also indicate higher Russian casualty figures compared to Ukrainian ones. The Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the casualty ratio between Russia and Ukraine to be in the range of 2.5:1 to 2:1. In a report published in January 2026, CSIS estimated that Russia had suffered nearly 1.2 million casualties up to December 2025, including those killed, wounded, and missing. Meanwhile, Ukrainian casualties were estimated at 500,000 to 600,000, with approximately 100,000 to 140,000 killed in battle. CSIS cautioned that casualty data is difficult to verify independently because both sides have an interest in inflating or minimising their respective loss figures. Therefore, the figures presented by Ukraine regarding Russian losses represent a claim from a party directly involved in the conflict, while estimates from independent institutions provide a comparative picture. The Russia-Ukraine war has been ongoing for more than four years since the full-scale invasion began. The high number of casualties reflects the continuing intensity of the conflict.
