Vehicle owners should still ensure that the fuel they use meets the manufacturer’s recommended engine specifications in order to maintain optimal vehicle performance and prevent premature wear and tear on engine components. Tri Yuswidjajanto Zaenuri emphasised that using fuel that does not meet the manufacturer’s recommendations is risky, regardless of whether it is cheap or expensive. “If the fuel meets the specifications, even if it is cheap, it will be safe. However, if it does not meet the specifications, even if it is expensive, it could potentially cause damage,” Tri told Kompas.com recently. This can lead to poor engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and the formation of carbon deposits due to incomplete combustion. According to Tri, this can happen in vehicles with low compression ratios that are designed to use fuel with a RON of 90-92, but are instead filled with fuel with a RON of 98, in the belief that this will improve performance. In fact, fuel with an excessively high octane rating can also lead to less effective combustion, which can reduce vehicle performance. The same applies to diesel engines. Tri said that using more expensive diesel fuel does not necessarily mean that it is suitable if the Cetane Number (CN) does not meet the engine’s requirements as recommended by the manufacturer. Tri reminded vehicle owners to always refer to the vehicle’s manual or the manufacturer’s official recommendations before choosing fuel. “As long as the fuel meets the specifications, the engine will operate optimally, regardless of whether the fuel is cheap or expensive,” he said.
