How Harita Nickel is Enhancing Human Resources Quality on Obi Island
North Maluku Province is intensifying programmes to revitalise educational units and fulfil facilities and infrastructure for all schools in the region. According to data from the Education Offices of Districts and Cities in North Maluku, at least 300 schools require assistance for building rehabilitation.
North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda has targeted ensuring no school is left behind. This is because adequate facilities and infrastructure form the primary foundation for realising quality education.
“We will ensure the acceleration of development, school assistance, and data alignment so that not a single school is left behind,” she stated, quoted from her remarks on Thursday (19/3/2026).
To address this issue, collaboration among various parties is needed, including from Harita Nickel. Throughout 2025, Harita Nickel implemented a community empowerment programme (PPM) in the infrastructure sector, encompassing the revitalisation of learning spaces.
In this regard, Harita Nickel executed a programme for community development and empowerment in infrastructure to repair the building of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Obi Marahai in Gambaru Village. The improvements included physical rehabilitation of the building, installation of walls, ceramic flooring, replacement of classroom and staff room roofs, as well as replacement of doors and windows.
Additionally, the construction of toilets and access to clean water, which involved building a borehole well, water pump, clean and wastewater pipe installations, and a water tank stand. Then, electrical installations in the form of light fixture sets.
Harita Nickel also provided 72 school desks, 72 school chairs, 4 bookcases, 4 teacher desks, 6 teacher chairs, 2 cupboards, and 1 ceiling fan.
Head of the Gambaru Village Government Section, Sudarjo Haringan, expressed appreciation to Harita Nickel for carrying out repairs to the MTs Obi Marahai building. He affirmed that the village government supports the activities and programmes conducted by Harita Nickel.
“For the people of Gambaru Village, this madrasah is very important as it is one of the places for children to continue their education. With the building now much improved, teaching and learning activities are hoped to become more comfortable. We hope these more decent facilities can support the learning spirit of the young generation in the village,” he said.
In agreement, Chairman of the Muhammad Al Muzakir Foundation, Abdulrahman Al Cakri, also expressed appreciation to Harita Nickel for repairing the Madrasah Tsanawiyah Obi Marahai building.
“Previously, our school’s condition was very basic, but now the students can learn more comfortably. We hope these better facilities can motivate the children to continue pursuing education enthusiastically,” he stated.
Besides the renovation and revitalisation of MTs Obi Marahai, Harita Nickel repaired the SMA Darul Fatah building, including ceramic flooring installation, ceiling, external wall plastering, and the addition of whiteboard facilities. Harita Nickel also built Rumah Belajar in Gambaru and Ocimaloleo villages and provided educational games that can stimulate children’s skills in recognising letters, numbers, and counting abilities.
CSR Programme Development and Compliance Manager of Harita Nickel, M Yuda Pranata, emphasised education as an important foundation in human resource development in the area, in line with the vision of the North Maluku Provincial Government.
“Through the improvement of facilities at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Obi Marahai in Gambaru Village, we hope the teaching and learning process can proceed more comfortably for students and teachers, while strengthening the learning spirit of the young generation on Obi Island,” he concluded.
