How Does the Quran View Same-Sex Relations? Consider These Eight Verses
The Quran contains several verses that explain the same-sex sexual behaviour practiced by the people of the Prophet Lut (peace be upon him). In these verses, the act is described as abominable, transgressive, and an evil that brought divine punishment upon his people.
In Surah Ash-Shu’ara’ verses 165 and 166, same-sex relations are described as a transgressive act. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says: “Do you approach males among the worlds, and leave what your Lord has created for you as your mates? But you are a people transgressing.” (QS Ash-Shu’ara’ 165-166)
In Surah Al-A’raf verses 80 and 81, same-sex relations are called an abominable act that had never been committed by any people before the people of Lut. Thus, the people of Lut are described as a people who exceeded the limits, earning punishment in this world and the hereafter. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says: “And [We had sent] Lot when he said to his people, ‘Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds? Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.’” (QS Al-A’raf 80-81)
In Surah An-Naml verses 54 and 55, same-sex relations are described as an abominable and ignorant act. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says: “And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, ‘Do you commit immorality while you are seeing? Do you indeed approach men with desire instead of women? Rather, you are a people behaving ignorantly.’”
