Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait, speaking in Kendari on Friday, emphasised that he would not hesitate to take strict legal action against any individuals attempting to cut or misuse the rights of poor communities.

“Ensure there is no corruption; it must be transparent. I will take firm action if there is corruption. The national budget must not be embezzled; the people’s rights must be fully upheld,” Sirait said after launching the BSPS programme across Sulawesi in Kendari.

Sirait explained that the home renovation or slum upgrading programme is a flagship initiative under President Prabowo Subianto’s leadership to swiftly and extensively ensure decent housing rights for citizens.

In Kendari, the target for improving housing quality saw a significant surge, jumping from 1,129 units in 2025 to 8,973 units in 2026.

He revealed that budget efficiency for the BSPS in the region was achieved through the ‘people’s tender’ system.

The innovation reduced construction material costs without compromising quality, allowing surplus funds to be fully redirected to community benefits.

According to him, the presence of high-ranking officials such as Interior Minister Tito Karnavian and Statistics Bureau Chief (BPS) during the visit underscored the critical importance of settlement improvements in Sulawesi for the central government.

On another note, the Housing Minister praised the close collaboration and community spirit demonstrated by DPR member Ridwan Bae, local leaders, and Kendari City government officials in the housing improvement process.

“This shows cooperation between the central and city governments. The mayor’s efforts are commendable—it’s quite rare. We’re managing our people’s affairs with care and professionalism,” he stated.

He added that President Prabowo Subianto and the Cabinet Secretary continuously monitor the programme’s progress to ensure it runs effectively, swiftly, and with widespread impact across Indonesia.
