Housing Assistance for Monggalan Beach Abrasion Victims to Commence in August

Housing assistance for victims of abrasion at Monggalan Beach, Kusamba Village, Dawan District, Klungkung, Bali, is set to begin construction in August 2026. The victims, who have been displaced since early January 2026, must continue to wait for the budget disbursement process to be completed.

The Head of the Klungkung Department of Public Works, Spatial Planning, Housing, and Settlement Areas (PUPRPKP), I Made Jati Laksana, stated that the construction target is planned for August 2026. Currently, four heads of households have applied for terraced housing assistance, while five heads of households are requesting home renovations.

“As of now, the application process for home renovations is undergoing review by the Inspectorate. Regarding the administration for the terraced housing application, it is still in the approval stage by the Regional Budget Team (TAPD) and will be discussed again on Wednesday, 10 June 2026,” Laksana explained to detikBali on Monday (8/6/2026).

Victims requesting assistance will have new homes built at the Shanti Rahayu Terraced Housing site in Sulang Village, Dawan District. Meanwhile, those requesting home renovations will have their existing houses repaired at their current locations.

The Head of the Klungkung Social Affairs Office (Dinsos), I Gusti Agung Gede Putra Mahajaya, explained that for the victims requesting terraced housing, new structures will be built rather than moving into existing Ministry of Social Affairs housing, which is already at full capacity. “We are providing land at that location for construction. The construction matter is entirely under the responsibility of the PUPR. We are only assisting by providing the land,” Mahajaya noted.

Observations show that the terraced housing location is quite far from Kusamba Village. This distance has led several victims to choose using their own land or borrowing land from relatives. One victim of the Monggalan Beach abrasion, Wayan Galung (52), has been forced to borrow his sibling’s land for the home renovation project because he considers the terraced housing site too distant. “I feel more comfortable here. So, I am using my sibling’s land for now,” Galung explained. Galung expressed hope that the home renovation assistance would be realised soon so that he and his family could have a decent and safe home, protected from disasters.
