Housing Along Railway Tracks Remains a Major Challenge for Jakarta
Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo, has emphasised that the provincial government will provide full support for President Prabowo Subianto’s efforts to prepare decent housing for residents still living along the railway tracks in the Senen area of Central Jakarta.
“The DKI Jakarta Government will provide full support for the central government’s steps in addressing housing issues along the railway tracks,” said Pramono, quoted from Antara on Friday (27/3).
Pramono described residents’ settlements in public spaces, from railway edges to public cemetery areas, as a chronic problem that has not been fully resolved in Jakarta. Therefore, he said, the handling is now directed gradually through relocation to apartment buildings.
According to Pramono, this approach has already begun at several locations, one of which is the Kebon Nanas public cemetery area. Since January 2026, residents who previously lived in that area have been relocated to simple rental apartments owned by the DKI Provincial Government.
He assessed that the relocation not only impacts area improvements but is also starting to be accepted by the relocated residents. The DKI Provincial Government, he continued, provides six months of free stay before residents are charged full rent.
“We provide six months free. After that, they pay or rent fully,” Pramono stated.
Pramono emphasised that the DKI Provincial Government will continue to align steps with the central government to regulate settlements in inappropriate locations while ensuring residents obtain more decent housing.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto stated that he would soon build housing for residents along the railway tracks in Senen after directly inspecting the area. In a video uploaded to his personal Instagram account, Prabowo was seen walking through the settlements in the area, about three kilometres from central Jakarta, accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
During the inspection, the President directly absorbed residents’ complaints and aspirations. He emphasised that the government would act quickly to provide more decent housing for the community in that area.
“Hearing the aspirations of the people there, insyaallah we will soon build decent housing for the people in that area quickly,” said Prabowo.
The President also reaffirmed his commitment to expanding the provision of decent housing for Indonesian society. (Z-10)
The President immediately contacted several related officials to ensure the handling process runs quickly.
