Housewives Were Once Enthusiastic About Processing Organic Waste, Now Their Spirit is Waning

The village head of Desa Pemogan, I Made Suwirya, has commended the efforts of resident Ana Rohanah Salamah in establishing an organic waste processing facility named Rumah Imut Maggot, where she utilises maggots to break down hundreds of kilograms of organic waste. “Of course, with community members like Mrs Ana, it is very helpful. Organic waste can be processed well using these maggots,” said Suwirya when met in Pemogan on Thursday (23/4/2026). Suwirya noted that maggot enthusiasts have existed in Desa Pemogan for several years, but the number of women’s groups initially mobilised to participate has decreased. “There are enthusiasts for this, and there is also a community of kampung housewives, but their spirit has somewhat declined,” he explained. Rumah Imut Maggot, managed by Ana Rohanah Salamah in Gang Sholeh, Kampung Islam Kepaon, Desa Pemogan, South Denpasar, was quite active in its early days. He acknowledged that Ana’s work is beneficial, particularly in tackling organic waste in Desa Pemogan. Ana’s activities have caught the attention of Sagung Antari Jaya Negara, the wife of Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara. Sagung Antari visited Rumah Imut Maggot this morning. She fully supports the existence of this organic waste processing initiative. “As conveyed by the lady regarding this matter, it must certainly be supported. Especially since waste is still an emergency. Fortunately, the community has started sorting, and now we need to continue with follow-up programmes,” she stated. She hopes that not only Ana but other residents in Desa Pemogan can resume sorting their waste together. “This is just the start. We restart from the spirit, rebuilding the community to understand and recognise maggots as one innovation,” she added. “Even though not everyone knows about it yet, with education and socialisation, it can certainly be achieved. The Denpasar government can also support sustainable maggot programmes that can generate income,” she concluded.
