Housewife jailed for abusing maid

SINGAPORE: A 52-year-old housewife in Singapore was sentenced
to a week's jail and fined $S1,500 Singapore (US$842) for ill-
treating and locking up her Indonesian maid, the Straits Times
reported Saturday.

Veronica May Smith pleaded guilty to throwing a table mat at
her 20-year-old maid as well as locking her up for four hours in
the bedroom in February, the report said.

Smith was also charged with slapping and throwing a slipper at
Siti Nurkhasanah Muhidin.

In a desperate attempt to escape her confinement, the maid
jumped out of the bedroom window located on the seventh floor of
an apartment building, suffering bruises, cuts and a broken tooth
