Houses face ruin

PEKALONGAN, Central Java: About 200 houses in the coastal village of Pataisari could tumble because of the intrusion of seawater caused by the rising tide, a mayoralty spokesman said.

Nurhadi, a resident of the fishing village, said that the seawater has not receded and is undermining the structures.

Many people are now to afraid to stay indoors fearing that their houses could collapse, he told Antara.

The city mayoralty spokesman said the seawater reaches as far as 100 meters above the watermark. An asphalt road has also been flooded. (05)
