House Speaker Responds to President's Plan to Form BGN Supervisory Board
House Speaker Puan Maharani has responded to the plan to establish a Supervisory Board for the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). The discourse on adding a new structure to the agency implementing the free nutritious meal project emerged following the resignation of Nanik Sudaryati Deyang as Head of BGN.
Puan did not explicitly assess the urgency of forming the BGN Supervisory Board. She stated that she is still awaiting further developments regarding the plan. However, she noted that the most important aspect is that the new organisational structure can improve the agency’s overall performance. ‘So that this programme can run better than we hope for the children of Indonesia,’ Puan said at the Parliament complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
In a separate occasion, Deputy Chairman of House Commission IX Charles Honoris expressed support for the plan to form the BGN Supervisory Board. However, he cautioned that the organisation must be designed to strengthen governance, enhance accountability, and ensure effective oversight of the free nutritious meal project’s implementation. He argued that the key point is not simply creating a new institution or appointing personnel. ‘The Supervisory Board must have clear, independent authority,’ Charles said when contacted on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
Furthermore, he said the BGN Supervisory Board must also be able to ensure that every policy, budget usage, and programme implementation proceeds with transparency, efficiency, and prioritises the safety of beneficiaries. He stated that his commission remains focused on the ongoing reform of BGN’s governance. ‘The change of leadership and the formation of the BGN Supervisory Board must be a momentum to accelerate improvements, not merely a change in organisational structure,’ said the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle politician.
House Commission IX member Irma Suryani Chaniago assessed that the agency implementing the free nutritious meal project indeed requires internal oversight. ‘Commission IX’s oversight is external, as a government partner,’ she said on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
The plan to form the BGN Supervisory Board was previously revealed by Nanik Sudaryati Deyang alongside her resignation announcement. In a Facebook post, Nanik claimed she had been asked by the President to assume the position of Chair of the BGN Supervisory Board. Nanik said the supervisory role could still be carried out amid her medical treatment. ‘The important thing is not handling money, I am completely traumatised,’ Nanik said, accompanied by a smiley emoji.
