House Speaker: NTT Is Not Alone, Government and Political Parties Work Together to Send Aid
House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has expressed deep condolences over the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.
“Once again, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to the people of NTT over the disaster that has occurred,” Puan said at the DPR Building in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
Puan urged the people of NTT to remain calm. She said the DPR, together with the government and various elements of society, had already gone to the affected areas to provide assistance.
“NTT is not alone. The DPR, the government, elements of society, political parties, God willing, are all working together to immediately accelerate the process or expedite the assistance that must be delivered there as soon as possible,” she said.
She further explained that on 16 August 2026, DPR representatives—namely Deputy Speaker Cucun Ahmad Syamsuridjal, Sari Yuliati, and Saan Mustopa—had already visited NTT directly.
“Two days ago, the DPR—Mrs Sari, Mr Saan, Mr Cucun, the leadership and several DPR members—conducted a visit to NTT,” Puan explained.
According to Puan, the visit coincided with those of ministers and other central government representatives to ensure that the disaster response process was proceeding swiftly.
Previously, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that the death toll from the NTT earthquake had risen to 68 people as of Monday, 17 August 2026.
“The data we have obtained to date shows 68 people have died,” said Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, on Monday, 17 August 2026.
Of that total, 26 people were from Manggarai Regency and 24 from East Manggarai Regency. Four people were from Nagekeo Regency and four from Sikka Regency.
Furthermore, two people were from Ende Regency, two from West Manggarai Regency, and two from Ngada Regency.
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck NTT on Saturday, 15 August 2026. The epicentre was in Nagekeo Regency.
