Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has assessed that the global dynamics unfolding at the start of 2026 demand more effective diplomacy oriented towards peaceful solutions.

According to her, the beginning of 2026 has been marked by rising tensions in international relations, both in the form of armed conflicts and escalating trade wars that are disrupting supply chains and slowing global economic growth.

“In an interdependent world, no nation can stand and remain safe alone. Global stability can only be achieved through cooperation,” Puan said during her speech at the Closing Plenary Session at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Thursday.

She stated that no country can progress without inter-state cooperation.

She observed that today’s international cooperation framework is built upon shared norms and commitments — from economic standards that measure competitiveness and sustainability, to social values that uphold human dignity, through to the principles of democracy and human rights as the foundations of civilised politics.

In this context, she argued, development should not be measured solely by growth figures, but by the quality of human life and the social justice felt by the people.

“Because we live in an interdependent world, Indonesia must strengthen its national resilience and competitiveness to secure a strong bargaining position in the global order,” she said.

She stated that the House, through its constitutional functions, has responded to various important and strategic matters relating to the integrity of national economic governance, the need for national legal reform, the strengthening of social protection in healthcare, and the conduct of foreign policy that remains on the path of an independent and active stance.

“The current state of the world is characterised by openness, interconnection, and increasingly intense currents of globalisation. Nations no longer stand alone, but are interconnected in networks of economic, social, political, and cultural ties,” she said.
