House Speaker Calls for Investigation into Cause of KMP Virgo Accident
Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani has urged the government to immediately carry out a thorough investigation to uncover the cause of the KMP Virgo Transport 8 accident. The investigation is needed to determine the factors behind the accident, from natural and weather conditions, technical aspects of the vessel, to human factors.
According to Puan, the results of the investigation must serve as the basis for evaluating the maritime safety system. Through its relevant parliamentary committees, the DPR will also monitor the investigation process to ensure it is carried out comprehensively and transparently.
“The government must immediately conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of this accident, whether natural, technical, or human factors,” said Puan, quoted on Tuesday (15/9).
Puan said the ship accident, which again claimed lives, shows there are still problems in maritime safety that must be addressed urgently. Evaluation should not only take place after an accident occurs, but must also ensure that preventive measures are running effectively. “Accidents at sea have happened far too often, and this must not be allowed to keep recurring,” said Puan.
Therefore, Puan asked the government to strengthen the national maritime safety system, including ensuring all safety procedures are strictly enforced. She considers these improvements important to prevent similar accidents from recurring and to protect the safety of passengers. “I am asking for a comprehensive improvement of the national maritime safety system, so that similar incidents do not claim lives again,” concluded the PDIP politician.
