TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said Wednesday that the legislature had not received a presidential letter concerning a possible change in the leadership of the Indonesian Military (TNI).
Dasco said President Prabowo Subianto had no plans to replace TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto at this time.
“Today, I can confirm that the House has not received a presidential letter concerning a change in the TNI command. Based on the information we have received, the President does not plan to replace the TNI commander,” Dasco said at the House complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Dasco acknowledged growing speculation about a possible change in the TNI’s top leadership in recent days but dismissed the reports as unfounded. He also said Prabowo’s meeting with hundreds of senior TNI and Indonesian National Police (Polri) officers on Wednesday morning was unrelated to speculation about the appointment of a new military commander.
“The meeting with senior TNI and Polri officers today was held at the President’s direction to provide briefings, strengthen their resolve, and reinforce their understanding of national values,” said Dasco, the daily chairman of the Gerindra Party.
Meanwhile, Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak has been mentioned as a potential candidate for TNI commander. Responding to the speculation, Maruli played down the issue.
“There’s nothing wrong with being mentioned as a candidate. After all, all service chiefs have the opportunity to be candidates,” Maruli said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
