House of Representatives to Review Dedi Mulyadi's Proposal to Rename West Java to Tatar Sunda

The House of Representatives (DPR) has stated it will review a proposal by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi to change the name of the province to Tatar Sunda. However, Deputy Chairman of Commission II DPR, Bahtra Banong, said his commission would first wait for the official proposal regarding the name change. ‘So perhaps later, if there is a proposal, we will study it further regarding such a proposal,’ Bahtra said at the parliament complex on Tuesday. According to him, any proposal to change the name of a regency, city, or province must be submitted to the central government, as it involves administrative matters. ‘Yes, it should be proposed to the central government. Because it concerns administration, regional administration,’ he said. Bahtra added that beyond administrative issues, a study is needed to examine the urgency. He said Commission II would accept all input from various parties during the review process. ‘Of course, every input will be studied further, more deeply, regarding this name change, whether there is something truly substantial, and why the name change needs to be done,’ he said. Meanwhile, all factions in the West Java Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) have given the green light to proceed with the proposal to the legislative stage. Chairman of Commission I of the West Java DPRD, Rahmat Hidayat Djati, explained that the discussion of the name change proposal is not without reason. According to him, one of the main considerations for the DPRD to advance the aspiration to the legislative stage is to preserve the Sundanese cultural identity, which is considered to be increasingly eroded. ‘The urgency is because the identity of the Sundanese people is threatened with extinction,’ said the PKB politician on Monday.
