House of Representatives Scrutinises Arrmanatha Nasir's Track Record, Urges Consistency in Indonesia's Foreign Policy
The appointment of Arrmanatha Nasir as Foreign Minister, replacing Sugiono by President Prabowo Subianto, has drawn significant attention from the House of Representatives (DPR).
Sukamta, Vice Chairman of Commission I of the DPR RI, highlighted Arrmanatha’s extensive track record as a career diplomat. Arrmanatha’s experience is expected to strengthen Indonesian diplomacy amidst increasingly complex global dynamics. Prior to becoming Foreign Minister, Arrmanatha served as Deputy Foreign Minister and possesses experience in various diplomatic assignments, including at the United Nations (UN).
“He is a career diplomat with long-standing experience, including at the UN. This is an essential asset for leading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs amidst an increasingly complicated international situation,” Sukamta stated in a briefing in Jakarta on Saturday (3/10/2026).
Sukamta expressed hope that Arrmanatha could strengthen the role of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in formulating and overseeing the President’s foreign policy. According to the DPR member representing the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Indonesia’s diplomatic capacity must be utilised optimally to ensure that every international policy and agreement is supported by mature studies, clear positions, and measurable follow-up.
“Inter-ministerial coordination must also be strong because many foreign affairs issues are directly related to the economy, defence, and the interests of the public,” said the PKS Fraction politician.
Sukamta also reminded the importance of maintaining the ‘free and active’ foreign policy principle as Indonesia’s foundation in determining its stance amidst various global interests. “The free and active foreign policy must safeguard Indonesia’s independence in decision-making. We need to be able to cooperate with various countries while remaining firm in defending our sovereignty and national interests,” he asserted.
He also touched upon several agendas that require the new Foreign Minister’s attention. These include the protection of Indonesian citizens (WNI) abroad and the strengthening of economic diplomacy to support national industries and create domestic jobs.
Furthermore, Sukmanta requested that the government remain consistent in advocating for Palestinian independence. Arrmanatha’s experience in multilateral forums also includes involvement in Palestinian issues at the UN. In 2024, he was recorded as one of the Vice Chairs of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
