House of Representatives Says Eastern Region Cement Production Capacity Reaches 27 Million Tonnes, Ensures Supply is Secure

Jakarta – Deputy Chairman of House Commission VI, Nurdin Halid, has stressed that every investment in the cement industry sector must maintain the investment climate, preserve environmental sustainability, and not disrupt the continuity of already operating industries. He also affirmed Commission VI’s stance supporting the moratorium policy on new cement factories amidst the current oversupply.

This was conveyed by Nurdin Halid whilst leading a Specific Working Visit of House Commission VI at the South Sulawesi Governor’s Office some time ago. The Specific Working Visit discussed the theme ‘Sustainable Operations of the Cement Industry in South Sulawesi and the Cement Factory Moratorium as a Follow-up to the Public Hearing Meeting of House Commission VI with South Sulawesi Nature Conservation Observers on 8 June 2026 regarding the investment plan of PT Conch Cement Indonesia in South Sulawesi.’

‘House Commission VI asks the government to maintain a balance between opening space for new investment and the sustainability of companies that have long operated in South Sulawesi. This balance is important so that investment can continue to drive the national and regional economy without creating pressure on existing industries that threaten workforce continuity and environmental sustainability,’ Nurdin asserted in a written statement on Monday, 13 July 2026.

The working visit was attended by key stakeholders from both central and regional levels. From Jakarta, besides House Commission VI, representatives from PT Danantara Asset Management and PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or SIG, were present. From South Sulawesi, the Regional Secretary of South Sulawesi Province, the Regent of Barru, the Regent of Pangkep, and representatives from the Barru and Pangkep Regency DPRDs attended. Also present were the President Directors of PT Semen Tonasa and PT Semen Bosowa, along with several other stakeholders.

Nurdin Halid explained that the visit was a follow-up to the aspirations of the South Sulawesi Nature Conservation Observers during the Public Hearing Meeting of House Commission VI on 8 June 2026 regarding the investment plan of PT Conch Cement Indonesia in South Sulawesi. According to Nurdin, there are differing views regarding the suitability of the investment project with spatial planning, necessitating a joint review by all stakeholders.

‘According to environmental observers, the construction of the industry is against the law because the Supreme Court has revoked its environmental permit due to non-compliance with spatial planning. However, we also received aspirations from the Government and the Barru Regency DPRD stating that the construction is already in accordance with spatial planning,’ Nurdin said.
