Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani has stated that her institution is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Indian Parliament in various regional and multilateral parliamentary forums. “We hope that the cooperation between our two parliaments will increasingly be oriented towards providing tangible benefits for the welfare of the people of both countries,” Puan said in her speech while receiving a visit from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Parliament Building in Jakarta on Tuesday. According to her, amidst increasing great power rivalry and other global challenges, Indonesia and India have a shared responsibility to maintain regional stability and strengthen development cooperation. Puan said that cooperation between nations and states must continue to be strengthened. In strengthening interstate cooperation, close synergy between legislative and executive institutions is an important asset. “Parliamentary diplomacy not only complements government diplomacy but also expands the space for dialogue, builds mutual understanding, strengthens trust, and encourages the emergence of political support for various bilateral and multilateral cooperation agendas of common interest,” she said. Puan also appreciated the Indian Parliament for establishing the India-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group in February 2026. The group is expected to work closely with the Bilateral Cooperation Group of the Indonesian House of Representatives and the Indian Parliament, which was formed in January 2025. She expressed hope that economic cooperation between the two countries will continue to develop positively in line with the increasing strategic partnership between Indonesia and India. “We hope that economic cooperation between the two countries moves beyond just increasing trade value, but also towards value creation, industrial downstreaming, technology transfer, and strengthening regional supply chains,” she said. Puan also affirmed her support for synergy between the governments and parliaments of both countries to create an investment climate that is more certain, transparent, and mutually beneficial. With this, Indonesia and India can enter a new phase of economic cooperation that is more balanced, innovative, and provides direct benefits to the people. Concluding her speech, the Speaker of the DPR RI appreciated PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia. “Greetings from us, the people of Indonesia, to the people of India, friends who have been bound by centuries of history, culture, and civilisation. May the friendship between our two nations continue to grow, bringing peace, progress, and prosperity for generations to come,” said Puan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Indonesian parliament building during his state visit to Jakarta. On this occasion, PM Modi also delivered a speech to members of the Indonesian parliament. The event was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly Ahmad Muzani, Speaker of the Regional Representative Council Sultan B. Najamudin, and members of the Red and White Cabinet.
