House of Representatives Officially Passes Police Bill into Law

The House of Representatives (DPR RI) has officially passed the Bill regarding the Third Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia into law. The decision was led directly by the Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, during a Plenary Session held at the Nusantara II Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/6/2026).

“The time has come for us to request the approval of the factions regarding the Bill on the Third Amendment to the Law on the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia; can it be approved to be enacted into law?” Dasco stated before the assembly. The question from Dasco was met with a unanimous shout from all attending members of parliament across various factions, who responded, “Agreed!”, followed by the striking of the gavel by Dasco.

This ratification marks the conclusion of a long series of debates at the Working Committee (Panja) level of Commission III of the DPR RI alongside government representatives. A crucial point in the Police Law is the extension of the retirement age for personnel. Specifically, under Article 30, paragraph 5, point c, the provision now states: ‘Specifically for four-star high-ranking officers, the retirement age is a maximum of 60 years and may be extended by one year or as required, as determined by a presidential decree.’

The Palace has responded to a proposal by the Minister of Human Rights, Natalius Pigai, regarding the Police Bill revision, which suggests opening opportunities for civilians to fill certain strategic non-operational positions within the National Police environment.
