House of Representatives Demands Bank Indonesia Take Responsibility for Rupiah Weakening
The PDI Perjuangan faction of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) has demanded accountability from Bank Indonesia regarding the sharp decline in the domestic currency’s exchange rate during a working meeting with the Governor of Bank Indonesia on Monday, 18 May 2026.
Criticism regarding the central bank’s performance was delivered by Harris Turino, a member of Commission XI of the DPR RI from the PDI Perjuangan faction, in the presence of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo. According to reports, the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar had plummeted significantly, touching the level of Rp17,648.
Harris Turino questioned the effectiveness of all policies implemented by the central bank to address the ongoing depreciation. “The critical question is that all instruments available to Bank Indonesia have been utilised, yet why does the rupiah continue to depreciate? A possible cause is what you mentioned in your presentation: that global pressure is extremely high,” stated Harris Turino.
The legislator from the PDI Perjuangan party reaffirmed the primary obligation of the monetary institution to maintain the stability of the national currency. “Nevertheless, it remains Bank Indonesia’s responsibility to maintain the stability of the rupiah,” Turino added.
The House of Representatives noted that this currency weakening is occurring amidst briefings regarding the significant scale of global economic pressures presented by Perry Warjiyo.
