House of Representatives' Commission XIII Notes Positive Progress in Inmate Rehabilitation at Penitentiaries
Tangerang (ANTARA) - Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives has noted several developments in rehabilitation efforts at penitentiaries and correctional institutions (Lapas), particularly in the recovery of inmates (WBP), showing positive progress.
Deputy Chair of Commission XIII of the House of Representatives, Dewi Asmara, stated in Tangerang on Monday that various rehabilitation programmes have begun to yield results, one of which drawing attention is the strengthening of resilience within penitentiaries, now being implemented more evenly.
In addition, rehabilitation for inmates is conducted through various educational and skills training programmes, including collaborations with external parties such as companies and related agencies.
Not only that, said Dewi, other activities such as fish farming, shrimp farming, and chicken rearing have also been underway. The results from these activities have even been produced and utilised through cooperatives within the correctional environment.
Therefore, the House of Representatives places great hope on the implementation of the new law emphasising a restorative justice approach, particularly the increasingly strong role of Community Guidance and Aftercare Boards (Bapas) and closer ties with society.
“Going forward, the functions and roles of Bapas are expected to increase further and provide greater contributions to the correctional system,” said Deputy Chair of Commission XIII of the House of Representatives, Dewi Asmara, after the Thanksgiving Event for the 62nd Correctional Service Day at the Tangerang Immigration and Correctional Polytechnic Campus on Monday.
Currently, said she, cross-sectoral cooperation is also being strengthened, including with the Ministry of Health, BPJS, and various other parties to improve the quality of rehabilitation services in a more humane manner, so that inmates can return to society equipped with skills and job opportunities.
Commission XIII of the House of Representatives appreciates the hard work of all correctional personnel across Indonesia, who have demonstrated significant progress.
Meanwhile, Minister of Immigration and Correctional Services Agus Andrianto added that over time, the correctional process is not only focused on legal matters but also on rehabilitation so that inmates regain hope for life after serving their sentences.
Therefore, according to him, various productive programmes are being run that support community welfare, such as food security and crafts, which have broad and positive impacts.
“We are implementing these programmes to build human character and deliver restorative justice for society. The hope is that the rehabilitation provided will be broadly beneficial after release,” said Agus Andrianto.
