House of Representatives Commission VII calls for review of standardisation regulations to keep pace with technological advances

Tangerang Selatan, Banten - Chairman of Commission VII of the House of Representatives Saleh Partaonan Daulay said current standardisation regulations need evaluation to keep up with technological and modern product developments entering Indonesia, such as electric vehicles which are largely imported.

“If regulatory gaps are found, the House plans to include new points in the revision of rules to align with current needs. We cannot let old laws fail to accommodate the current rise of electric vehicles,” Saleh said after a working session with the National Standardization Agency (BSN) in Tangerang Selatan, Banten, on Monday.

He said Commission VII has formed a Special Committee on National Standardisation to maximise BSN’s role as a state institution measuring and testing all commodities circulating in society, both local and imported products.

Currently, BSN’s functions are deemed suboptimal compared to the significant benefits it could provide for consumer protection and national product competitiveness.

“BSN plays a crucial role, but so far it appears lagging behind the potential benefits that could be achieved if its functions are fully utilised,” Saleh said.

He added the committee would examine technical and regulatory aspects governing BSN, including the effectiveness of its work with around 1,900 testing and measurement partner institutions across Indonesia.

Saleh explained BSN lacks necessary testing equipment, hence must collaborate with private companies, state-owned enterprises, and other government agencies.

“Now we want to see how effectively these institutions assist BSN and whether such partnerships also benefit BSN institutionally,” he said.

Meanwhile, Acting Head of BSN Yustinus Kristianto Widiwardono said electric vehicles already have SNI standards, including for battery swap systems, but implementation is ineffective as the relevant ministry has not yet mandated them.

“If mandated, all products entering Indonesia must undergo testing,” Yustinus said.
