House of Representatives Asserts Election Bill Discussions are in Early Stages
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, stated that the meeting of political party chairpersons regarding the Draft Election Law (RUU Pemilu) is currently limited to a brainstorming forum in preparation for subsequent discussions by parliamentary factions.
According to Dasco, the meeting serves as an initial space to exchange views on several issues within the Election Bill. As the process is still in its early stages, the forum has not yet produced any decisions regarding the parliamentary threshold.
“Brainstorming does not involve final determinations; therefore, the results of these discussions are roughly as conveyed by Mr Sugiono,” Dasco said on Thursday (17/09/2026).
Dasco noted that the proposal for a 5 per cent parliamentary threshold is one of the perspectives emerging during the discussions. Deliberations will continue and may adapt to the dynamics that arise during the drafting process of the Election Bill.
In this process, political parties are also awaiting the results of public participation collected by Commission II of the House of Representatives, which is a mandatory stage before further discussions. This input will subsequently serve as material for discussions at the faction level.
“Brainstorming is only in the early stages and will continue so that the discussions by the factions in the House of Representatives can proceed smoothly,” he added.
Dasco mentioned that follow-up forums will be conducted alongside the progress of the discussions. Regarding political parties that did not attend previous meetings, he ensured that all parties would be involved in future sessions.
“We will invite everyone later,” said Dasco.
According to Dasco, the discussion process for the Election Bill will be a lengthy one. Given the ongoing stages, various views from political parties and the results of public participation will form part of the dynamics within the House of Representatives.
