House of Representatives Approves Indonesia's Acceptance of Japanese Patrol Vessel Grant Worth Rp 205 Billion
A plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the acceptance of a patrol vessel grant from Japan valued at 1.9 billion yen, equivalent to approximately Rp 205 billion. The vessel, destined for the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), is being provided through Japan's Official Security Assistance (OSA) programme. Members of parliament gave their approval following a report from Commission I of the DPR on its deliberations with the Ministry of Defence.
In his report, Deputy Chairman of Commission I, Dave Akbarshah Fikarno, stated that the approval of the foreign defence and security equipment grant had been discussed with the government on 10 February 2026.
"Commission I of the DPR approves the acceptance of the Patrol Boat 18M Class grant valued at 1.9 billion yen from the Government of Japan to the Indonesian Navy," said Dave during the plenary session at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Thursday, 19 February 2026.
The Golkar Party politician added that the grant proposal had been submitted by Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin through an official letter dated 24 November 2025. Dave noted that the government required DPR approval as a mandatory condition for accepting any gift or loan from a foreign institution or government.
After hearing the report, DPR Speaker Puan Maharani, who chaired the plenary session, sought the members' approval. "Can the report from Commission I of the DPR on the approval to accept the Patrol Boat 18M Class grant from the Government of Japan be approved?" asked Puan.
Members of parliament responded in unison with "Approved," which was subsequently ratified with a strike of the gavel. During the same session, the DPR also approved the cancellation of a planned acceptance of defence and security equipment from South Korea, as communicated through a letter from the Defence Minister dated 27 January 2026.
Previously, Deputy Defence Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto had stated that the acceptance of the Japanese vessel grant would have a positive impact on the Indonesian Navy's capacity to secure the nation's territorial waters. He noted that Indonesia's maritime territory is extremely vast and potentially vulnerable to security threats.
He also highlighted the operational benefits of accepting the Japanese patrol vessel for the Navy. "This patrol boat is fast and agile, making it highly suitable for operations in Indonesian waters," he said after a meeting with Commission I at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 February 2026.
He emphasised that the vessel grant would not burden the state's fiscal position, as the acceptance of the defence and security equipment would not require any expenditure from the national budget whatsoever.
"From a foreign relations perspective, this grant will strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, particularly between their respective defence ministries," said Donny.
