House of Representatives Applauds Government Commitment to Maintain Subsidised Fuel and LPG Prices
Jamaludin Malik, a member of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) from the Golkar Party faction, has commended the government’s commitment, as conveyed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, to maintain the prices of subsidised fuel (BBM) and LPG until 31 December 202scale6. This statement was made by Bahlil during the opening of the V Grand Deliberation of PPK Kosgoro 1957 on Friday. According to Jamaludin, this policy demonstrates the government’s commitment to safeguarding public purchasing power amidst global economic dynamics and fluctuations in world energy prices.
He noted that certainty in energy prices plays a vital role in maintaining national economic stability. Affordable fuel and LPG prices will assist in controlling inflation, protecting public purchasing power, and providing certainty for businesses conducting economic activities throughout 2026.
“The government’s commitment to maintaining the prices of subsidised fuel and LPG until the end of the year is the right step. Amidst global conditions that remain full of uncertainty, the public requires certainty so that purchasing power remains protected and economic activities can proceed smoothly,” said Jamaludin, as quoted from a written statement received on Monday.
He added that the policy is supported by oil price developments, which are showing a more favourable trend. The government set the Indonesian Crude Price (ICP) for May 2026 at US$106.56 per barrel, a decrease of approximately US$10.75 per barrel compared to the April 2026 ICP, which reached US$117.31 per barrel. This decline provides better fiscal space for the government to maintain domestic energy price stability.
Jamaludin emphasised that energy subsidies still serve a strategic role as an instrument of social protection and an economic cushion for low-income communities. Furthermore, energy price stability is crucial for the sustainability of productive sectors such as MSMEs, transport, fisheries, agriculture, and other business sectors that drive the national economy.
He argued that the policy of maintaining energy prices must be accompanied by measures to strengthen national energy security. The government needs to continue encouraging increased oil and gas production, accelerating the development of new oil and gas fields, strengthening energy downstreaming, and developing new and renewable energy to ensure long-term national energy supply.
“Support for the public must go hand in hand with efforts to strengthen the national energy foundation. Therefore, increasing domestic energy production, improving energy sector governance, and accelerating investment must remain priorities to strengthen national energy security,” he stated. Commission XII of the DPR added that it will continue to support energy policies oriented towards the interests of the people, the maintenance of national economic stability, and the strengthening of Indonesia’s energy security.
