Jakarta (ANTARA) - Commission VII DPR RI member Bane Raja Manalu said students of Medan Tourism Polytechnic (Poltekpar) must prepare their competencies and play an active role in advancing the tourism sector of North Sumatra.

In a statement in Jakarta, Bane said tourism development cannot rely solely on the beauty of destinations, but requires accessibility, amenities, attractions, and human resources capable of providing services to tourists.

“Moreover, preparing tourism human resources is also very important because beautiful places are not only found in North Sumatra, so we must treat visiting tourists well,” Bane said while delivering a public lecture before 687 students of Poltekpar Medan, North Sumatra, on Wednesday.

He said students can also contribute through tourism promotion by disseminating information about North Sumatra’s natural wealth, arts, culture, and cuisine through various platforms.

“Who here has posted about the beauty of North Sumatra, promoting its tourism? Because there are too many beautiful stories about North Sumatra that can be shared,” Bane said.

Bane also conveyed plans to hold a number of events in 2026 and 2027, namely Tarik Tombur Toba, Bagak Marnatal, and SoundNauli.

These events are designed to combine arts, culture, and creativity as part of efforts to introduce North Sumatra’s potential and encourage an increase in tourist visits, including from neighbouring countries.

He expressed hope that students would gain insights that support the development of their competencies.

“Thank you, Mr Bane, for providing valuable experience for the students. We deliberately invited new students so that on your next visit you can see their progress,” said Emrizal.
