House Member Urges BSSN to Accelerate AI Human Resource Development

Jakarta - Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Nurul Arifin, has urged the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) to accelerate human resource development in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity expertise to enable Indonesia to safeguard its digital sovereignty. She stated that the offensive capabilities of AI differ from conventional cyber threats because such systems can adapt, discover vulnerabilities, and plan intrusions persistently without direct human control. “AI is the servant, humans are the master. Do not let these roles swap places,” Nurul said during a meeting with BSSN at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Monday. According to her, the development of AI not only presents economic opportunities and accelerates digital transformation but also brings new challenges touching on aspects of national security, democracy, data protection, and social life. “Technology must not be viewed solely from the perspective of efficiency or economic gain. AI development must continue to place humans at the centre of every decision,” she said. The advancement of AI, she noted, has driven the emergence of new, complex cyber threats that are increasingly difficult to counter with conventional security approaches. This situation, she said, must be a serious concern for BSSN in strengthening the national cybersecurity system. She assessed that technological reinforcement must be accompanied by closer coordination between ministries, agencies, and local governments. To that end, she stated that human resource readiness is a decisive factor in building national digital independence. The development of AI and cybersecurity talent must be a priority so that Indonesia does not merely become a user of technology developed by other countries. “Do not let technological progress be enjoyed only by a handful of parties. AI must be a means to improve public welfare and realise social justice,” she said.
