House Member Demands MPR Budget Increase Be Justified for Public Benefit
House of Representatives Commission XIII member Marinus Gea has highlighted the People’s Consultative Assembly’s (MPR RI) proposal for an additional budget of nearly Rp1 trillion for the 2027 fiscal year. He stated that any additional budget requested by state institutions must be accountable for its benefits to the public and directed towards strengthening institutional functions.
“During the working meeting on the MPR RI’s 2027 Work Plan and Budget discussion, I stressed that every budget increase must be accountable for its benefits to the people,” Gea said in a statement on Wednesday (17/6/2026).
He made the remarks during the Working Meeting on the MPR RI’s 2027 Work Plan and Budget held at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Monday (15/6).
Previously, Acting Secretary General of the MPR RI Siti Fauziah stated that the MPR had received an indicative ceiling of Rp945.57 billion for 2027. Additionally, the MPR proposed a supplementary budget of Rp972 billion to support various programmes, including a national aspiration forum, dissemination of the MPR RI’s Four Pillars, and other institutional needs.
Responding to the proposal, Gea cautioned that the requested additional budget must be genuinely focused on executing the MPR RI’s constitutional duties and delivering tangible impacts for the community. He noted that amidst the proposed additional budget of nearly Rp1 trillion beyond the indicative ceiling, there were still plans to renovate workspaces, meeting rooms, buildings, and even official residences for leaders, which he believes require deeper scrutiny regarding their urgency and benefits.
According to him, the use of state funds must prioritise needs that truly support institutional performance and the public interest. He therefore recommended that the MPR RI prioritise its budget for strengthening constitutional duties, constitutional studies, bureaucratic reform, internal oversight, and programmes that directly impact the strengthening of democracy and national life.
“Prioritise the budget for strengthening the MPR RI’s constitutional duties, constitutional studies, bureaucratic reform, internal oversight, and programmes that directly impact the strengthening of democracy and national life,” he asserted.
He also called for a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed additional budget, guided by the principles of efficiency, accountability, propriety, and alignment with the people’s interests. He added that a careful evaluation of all spending proposals is necessary to ensure the state budget is truly aligned with the needs of the community and the national development agenda.
