House Leaders Urge Patriotism After Indonesia Raises Citizenship Renunciation Fee
House of Representatives (DPR) leaders have spoken out regarding the government’s policy adjusting the application fee for renouncing Indonesian citizenship (WNI) to Rp 5 million. DPR Speaker Puan Maharani urged citizens to love their homeland. “Regarding the payment for changing citizenship, we hope no WNI will change their citizenship,” Puan said during a press conference after a plenary session at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/7/2026). “Hopefully, all Indonesian citizens will continue to love Indonesia,” she added. Deputy Speaker Saan Mustopa echoed the sentiment, stating that fostering a sense of patriotism is crucial. “We certainly want to cultivate a love for the homeland, it is important. A sense of love and belonging towards the homeland is essential,” Saan said. However, Saan also reminded the government to consider the policy carefully to ensure it does not burden citizens. “Regarding matters that could burden citizens, it is important to think about this so that citizens do not feel encumbered,” he added. Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas previously addressed the spotlight on the adjusted citizenship service fees. He asserted that the fee increases, both for naturalisation and renunciation, were aimed at improving service quality and supporting digital transformation. Supratman explained that the tariff adjustment is part of an update to the Government Regulation on Non-Tax State Revenue, which had not been revised for a decade. “Indeed, there has been a tariff adjustment. But the essence is, firstly, the adjustment is in the context of improving services. The Government Regulation on Non-Tax State Revenue has not changed for 10 years. Secondly, what is currently viral concerns the increase in fees for foreign nationals applying to become Indonesian citizens,” Supratman told reporters at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday (20/7). He explained that one of the widely discussed tariffs is the application fee for foreign nationals to become Indonesian citizens, which rose from Rp 50 million to Rp 75 million. According to him, this amount is not an issue for groups with greater economic means. The government also adjusted the fee for renouncing Indonesian citizenship. Supratman stated that this tariff change would only impact a relatively small number of applicants. “For instance, the application for loss of citizenship went from Rp 1 million to Rp 5 million. The total number of applicants at the Ministry of Law is only around 200 or 300 people. So, this is not a problem for the nation. On average, they are people who have the means. But regardless of ability, the system we are building must be maintained,” he said.
