An Indonesian resident’s house in Krapyak Wetan, Panggungharjo, Sewon, Bantul, burned down this morning. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. No fatalities or injuries were reported. Bantul Regency Fire and Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) officer Kristanto Kurniawan said the incident began when the homeowner, Hatta Tantular, smelled the odour of burning wires since Tuesday afternoon (19 May). ‘But after searching for the source of the smell, it could not be found,’ he told reporters on Wednesday (20 May 2026). Around 04:00 WIB this morning, Hatta saw flames emanating from a socket behind a plastic cabinet. The fire spread and consumed the building. ‘The flames grew and burned the house,’ Kristanto said. On realising this, Hatta asked neighbours for assistance and contacted Bantul Fire Department. Soon after, a fire truck arrived at the scene. ‘There were no fatalities or injuries; losses were limited to household furniture, the house structure, and several electronic items that were destroyed. The estimated loss amounted to around Rp 20 million,’ Kristanto added. Regarding the cause, Kristanto said it was due to an electrical short circuit, which triggered sparks. ‘The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit,’ he concluded. (dil/apu)
