House Deputy Speaker Supports Immigration and Corrections Ministry's Home Renovation Aid Initiative
Deputy Speaker of House Commission XIII, Dewi Asmara, has expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas) for initiating a social assistance programme to renovate homes in Warungkiara, Sukabumi, West Java. She described the programme as a breakthrough with significant benefits for recipients. “I would like to thank and express my appreciation to the Minister, the Director General, and Mr Panji. A programme like this is certainly a breakthrough,” Dewi said during the handover of assistance at Warungkiara Prison in Sukabumi on Wednesday (10/6/2026). “This shows that corrections is not only about integrating inmates back into society, but it has directly and tangibly reached the community, and the community is feeling the benefits.”
She noted that the programme involves prisoners as workers in producing building materials and carrying out construction. She assessed that this simultaneously prepares inmates for their return to society. “This is part of the development and preparation process for inmates so they can eventually re-enter society. As far as we know, all these costs are fully self-funded from the harvests of food security programmes run by the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections,” she stated.
Dewi added that the initiative exemplifies the process of integration and assimilation, highlighting many positive activities undertaken by inmates after serving their sentences. “I hope with today’s event, we can demonstrate that there are many positive efforts made by the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections to prepare inmates for reintegration, carrying out various food security programmes that benefit not only the inmates themselves but also the community.”
She also mentioned being impressed by a prison in Tangerang where inmates produce paving blocks from coal ash waste. She requested that Sukabumi pursue a similar initiative, especially given the presence of a coal-fired power plant in Pelabuhan Ratu. “The distance between Warungkiara and Pelabuhan Ratu is about 15 minutes. I would ask for the Regent’s assistance to utilise the coal ash waste from Pelabuhan Ratu so it does not harm the environment, turning it into prefabricated coal ash for building materials or paving blocks,” she said.
