Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sari Yuliati, has conveyed her deep concern and condolences over the tragic incident involving three santri in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, who were allegedly subjected to violence, resulting in one fatality. The incident has caused profound grief for the victim’s family and the community. ‘I extend my deepest condolences to the victim’s family. There is no justification whatsoever for acts of violence that take a person’s life, especially against santri who are pursuing their studies,’ Sari said in a statement cited on Tuesday (9/6/2026). As Deputy Speaker of the House and a representative from the Lombok electoral district, Sari urged law enforcement officials to investigate this case thoroughly and transparently. All parties involved must be held accountable in accordance with applicable legal provisions. ‘I ask law enforcement to uncover this case comprehensively. There must be no tolerance for perpetrators or parties proven negligent in allowing this incident to occur. Justice must be upheld, and the victim’s family deserves it,’ she asserted. According to Sari, this case must become a serious concern for all parties to prevent recurrence. A thorough evaluation of the supervision and child protection systems within pesantren environments needs to be conducted to ensure the safety of all santri. However, Sari reminded the public not to generalise this incident to all Islamic boarding schools. She emphasised that, to this day, many pesantren continue to function well and provide a safe, comfortable, and conducive environment for their students. ‘We must not judge all pesantren because of the actions of a few individuals. I believe many pesantren in Lombok and throughout Indonesia remain safe places for learning, building character, morals, and the future of the nation’s young generation,’ she stated. Furthermore, Sari called upon all elements of society, pesantren administrators, religious leaders, and local governments to strengthen the system of protection and prevention against all forms of violence within pesantren environments. ‘The safety and protection of santri must be a shared priority. There must be no room for violence in any form within the pesantren environment. Children must be able to learn and study with a sense of safety and comfort,’ she concluded.
