House Deputy Speaker Proposes Central Government Fund Salaries for Regional PPPK Teachers

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Bahtra Banong has proposed that the central government take over the financing of regional teachers holding the status of Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK). The proposal, made at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, aims to ease the fiscal burden on local governments. “Hopefully, this can be followed up further and resolved in the future,” Bahtra said. He noted the suggestion arose after numerous regional administrations complained about their limited fiscal capacity to pay PPPK teachers. Bahtra also proposed that the central government cover the costs of PPPK health workers. He added that several local governments are hoping for an increase in the transfer budget to regions in 2027, though he stated that decision rests with the Budget Committee. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has confirmed that non-civil servant teachers can continue working until the end of 2026 while the government prepares a national policy on the arrangement of non-permanent staff.
