House Deputy Speaker Dasco: DPR Leadership to Meet Student Protesters Tomorrow
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the student demonstration centred at the DPR on Friday, 19 June, is lawful. According to him, the DPR leadership plans to meet and hold an audience with student representatives. “Tomorrow there is indeed a plan to be received by the DPR leadership,” said the Gerindra Party politician at the DPR building in Jakarta on Thursday, 18 June 2026. Dasco has not yet disclosed the exact time the meeting will be held, nor has the identity of the students in question been mentioned. A number of student executive bodies (BEM) from various faculties at Trisakti University will stage a protest at the DPR on Friday. The call to action from various faculty BEMs was uploaded via social media accounts, such as BEM FH Trisakti and BEM STMA Trisakti. The protest is scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m., carrying three main demands. Students are calling for economic and political recovery, the eradication of incompetent officials, and a push to restore civilian supremacy. “BEM FH Trisakti University invites all students and elements of society to attend and voice their aspirations,” read the caption of a post by the account @bem.fh.trisaksi on Friday. According to the Trisakti student alliance, the demonstration is a form of oversight of state policy and ensures the upholding of democratic values. A wave of student demonstrations and civil society coalitions began last week, triggered by the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar. Students from various regions in Indonesia are demanding the government lower the prices of staple goods and fuel, and halt programmes strongly indicated to waste the budget, such as the free nutritious meals initiative.
