House Deputy Backs Police Probe into Coal Supply Corruption Causing Sumatran Blackouts
House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Ahmad Sahroni has expressed support for the National Police’s Corruption Eradication Corps (Kortas Tipikor) in thoroughly investigating the alleged corruption in coal supply that triggered mass blackouts in Sumatra. Sahroni described this as the right moment to clean up corruption.
“I support the Police’s Kortas Tipikor for daring to investigate the alleged corruption involving foul play,” Sahroni said on Thursday (9/7/2026). He emphasised that this move is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to eradicating corruption. “This is in accordance with President Prabowo’s directives on corruption eradication, and in this case, it is certainly the best moment for a clean-up in law enforcement,” he added.
Sahroni also warned against any interference in the legal process. “Other parties involved should maintain peace so that this clean-up proceeds according to President Prabowo’s expectations,” he stated.
The Kortas Tipikor Polri is investigating the corruption case related to the fulfilment of coal supplies that caused blackouts in Sumatra and other parts of Indonesia. The case has been elevated to the investigation stage since 4 July 2026. Head of Kortas Tipikor Polri, Inspector General Totok Suharyanto, announced that investigators found two companies, PT OBP and PT BRA, allegedly involved in irregularities in the procurement and fulfilment of coal supplies to power plants (PLTU).
Director of Enforcement at Kortas Tipikor Polri, Brigadier General Robertus Yohanes De Deo, added that the alleged perpetrators used several methods, including document manipulation. Investigators also discovered manipulation of the quantity of coal supplied to the power plants, leading to payments or contract prices that did not match the actual supply conditions. No suspects have been named yet, but investigators have examined 16 witnesses and analysed numerous documents. State losses are estimated at Rp 5 trillion.
