House Commission XIII Pushes for Integrated Digitalisation of Immigration System
Jakarta - Member of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Marinus Gea, has urged the digitalisation of the immigration system to be integrated from the central level down to the regions in order to strengthen supervision of foreign nationals in Indonesia.
In a statement in Jakarta on Saturday, Marinus said immigration plays a vital role in safeguarding state sovereignty as the gateway for foreigners entering and exiting the country, as well as overseeing their activities within Indonesia.
“The data presented so far has often raised questions because we suspect there is still a lack of transparency. Therefore, more transparent digitalisation is needed so that data access can be carried out nationally and in an integrated manner,” said Marinus.
The statement was made during a working visit by House Commission XIII to North Sumatra on Friday, where he met with regional immigration officials.
During the visit, he assessed that immigration data is a crucial instrument that must be optimally accessible by supervisory officers in the regions.
Marinus explained that the Directorate General of Immigration already has access to national data, but the system needs to be distributed down to regional offices and local immigration offices.
He noted that the greatest supervisory burden actually lies in the regions, which deal directly with the activities of foreign nationals.
“If supervision is only monitored by the central government, the burden is certainly very heavy. We have many entry and exit points for foreigners in Indonesia,” he stated.
“Therefore, the distribution of supervision must be carried out through an open and transparent digital system,” he continued.
Through such a system, officers would be able to monitor the number of foreign arrivals, types of residence permits, locations of stay, permit validity periods, and departure data of foreigners from Indonesia.
He stressed that an integrated system would increase the effectiveness of supervision while strengthening the accountability of immigration administration across all regions.
