House Commission XIII Evaluates Overcapacity in Central Papua Prisons

House Commission XIII of the Indonesian Parliament (DPR RI) has evaluated the condition of correctional facilities in Central Papua that are suffering from overcapacity and require improved facilities and infrastructure to support more optimal correctional services. Commission member Yan Permenas Mandenas stated in Timika on Saturday that the evaluation was conducted through working visits to the Class IIB Prison in Timika, Mimika Regency, and the Class IIB Prison in Nabire, Nabire Regency, as part of monitoring the implementation of standard operating procedures. According to him, both prisons face overcapacity issues that impact correctional services and require government attention. In addition to evaluating the prisons, the commission also highlighted immigration services, particularly the supervision of foreign nationals in Central Papua to prevent administrative violations. Mandenas noted that oversight is crucial given Central Papua’s significant natural resource potential, which makes it a destination for foreign nationals engaged in business activities or other interests, including the mining sector. During the working visit, Commission XIII also collaborated with the Ministry of Human Rights and the National Commission on Human Rights to gather input regarding alleged human rights violations in Central Papua as material for policy evaluation in the fields of corrections, immigration, and human rights.
