House Commission XII Chair Applauds Police Probe into Alleged Coal Corruption
Jakarta, VIVA – Bambang Patijaya, Chair of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), has commended the Indonesian National Police for their courage in uncovering alleged fraudulent practices in the coal supply chain for power generation. According to him, the move reflects a commitment to law enforcement that deserves support in order to safeguard national energy resilience and improve governance in the electricity sector.
Bambang explained that the coal procurement mechanism is a business-to-business (B2B) transaction. Therefore, the primary focus must be on strengthening procurement governance, from the purchasing process through to supervision and the receipt of coal, so that every stage proceeds in a transparent, professional and accountable manner.
Bambang asserted that such problems must be resolved to their very roots. In his view, practices that harm the state and disrupt the reliability of energy supplies must not be allowed to recur, as they merely drain the nation’s energy in resolving issues that could have been prevented through good governance.
“We applaud the police’s courage in uncovering this alleged problem. Cases like this must be resolved thoroughly so that they serve as a lesson for all parties and do not continue to drain our energy over governance issues that should have been preventable,” Bambang said in a statement on Saturday, 11 July 2026.
He reminded that Commission XII of the DPR RI has paid serious attention to strengthening coal procurement governance since 2022. According to him, oversight must be prioritised to ensure that both the quality and volume of coal received genuinely conform to the contract.
“We have been warning since 2022 to focus on fixing coal procurement governance. Supervision of quality and volume must be strengthened, including through the role of independent and professional surveyors,” he said.
Bambang emphasised that every stage of inspection must be carried out strictly to ensure there is no room for fraudulent practices. Verification of quality, quantity and delivery administration must proceed transparently and accountably, thereby protecting the interests of both the state and the public as electricity consumers.
Commission XII of the DPR RI, Bambang continued, will continue to shepherd improvements in energy sector governance so that every procurement process takes place in a transparent and accountable manner, and is able to guarantee reliable energy supplies for the public and the business community.
