House Commission X Urges Sports Minister to Finalise Preparations for 2028 National Sports Week
The House of Representatives’ Commission X invited the Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, to discuss preparations for the 2028 National Sports Week (PON) on Tuesday (3/6/2026). The discussions also covered youth and sports programmes, as well as Indonesia’s readiness for the 2026 Asian Games.
Commission X requested that the Ministry of Youth and Sports ensure the hosting of the event in West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara runs optimally to foster high-achieving athletes. In response, the Minister stated that Jakarta would serve as a supporting province to compensate for venue limitations.
“In the implementation of PON 2028, Jakarta will act as a buffer province due to venue constraints. During the KONI National Working Meeting in May, it was also established that the following PON in 2032 will be held in Banten and Lampung, so it is hoped that the hosts will have more time to prepare,” said Erick Thohir, as reported by the Ministry’s official website.
Commission X also urged the Central Government to immediately issue the Decree for the Large Committee (SKPB) of the 22nd National Sports Week (PON XXII) 2028. The absence of an official committee decree is considered a major obstacle for regional authorities in initiating the crucial preparation stages for Indonesia’s largest sporting event.
The Vice Chairman of Commission X, Lalu Hardian, emphasised that legal certainty from the Central Government is highly anticipated by the two provinces serving as co-hosts, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). According to him, findings from Commission X’s working visits showed that both regional governments are prepared, but their progress is hindered by administrative issues at the central level.
“The success of the event depends heavily on full support from the Central Government, particularly the acceleration of the SKPB issuance for the 21st PON, so that the official committee can immediately begin drafting master plans, determining budget requirements, and coordinating across sectors in a timely, transparent, and standardised manner,” said Lalu Hardian while presiding over the working meeting at the Nusantara I Building, Senayan.
He explained that accelerating this decree would also directly impact preparations for the 18th National Para Games (PEPARNAS), which must be integrated with PON XXII. Without clear committee management from the centre, field challenges such as regional budget (APBD) limitations, the need for disability-friendly venue accessibility, and transportation coordination with the Ministry of Transportation will be difficult to resolve.
In addition to the PON matters, during the meeting—conducted in line with the oversight functions of Law Number 42 of 2014—Commission X also highlighted the need for bureaucratic reform within the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the assurance of welfare for athletes post-retirement. The House expects the Minister to take tactical steps to ensure that the strategic work plans for the 2026 Fiscal Year run optimally and reflect strong budgetary accountability.
