Deputy Chairman of House Commission X, Lalu Hadrian Irfani, is urging law enforcement officers to thoroughly investigate the case of a santri burning at an Islamic boarding school in Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. He requested that all parties involved be dealt with firmly and professionally. “Whoever is involved in this case, we ask that they be dealt with firmly and professionally,” Hadrian said after attending a socialisation event for the National Education System Bill at the NTB Governor’s Office in Mataram on Thursday. The politician from the NTB 2 Lombok Island electoral district assessed that the tragic incident, which saw three santri set on fire and resulted in one fatality, has tarnished the image of NTB, a region long known as the land of ‘A Thousand Mosques’ and ‘A Thousand Pesantren’. He stressed the importance of legal accountability for anyone proven guilty so that the region’s good name is not further damaged by this case. Beyond the legal aspects, Hadrian also highlighted the fate of the victims. He asked the Ministry of Religious Affairs, through the NTB Regional Office, to immediately intervene to find a solution, particularly regarding the financial obstacles to medical care for the three santri. “We hope the NTB Ministry of Religious Affairs Regional Office will immediately find a solution for the costs of care, health, and the continuity of education for the three santri,” he said. House Commission X emphasised that it does not want the santri’s education to be halted due to this incident, whether because of violence or regulatory issues. Hadrian also stressed that the management of the Islamic boarding school must take full responsibility for the incident that befell their students. He called on all boarding school administrators in NTB to be more open about cases involving santri and not to cover up problems. This is considered crucial to maintaining NTB’s reputation as a quality centre for Islamic education at both the national and international levels.
