House Commission X on Unsoed Rector Case: Campus Is Not a Place for Transactions
Deputy Chairman of House Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Lalu Hadrian Irfani, has highlighted the alleged corruption in the new student admission process at Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed).
Lalu Hadrian stressed that higher education institutions must not become places for buying and selling educational access for those with greater financial means.
He expressed concern over the case involving Unsoed Rector Akhmad Sodiq. In his view, bribery practices or the manipulation of new student admissions must not occur in any higher education environment.
“On behalf of House Commission X of the DPR RI, we express our concern and deep regret if the alleged manipulation of new student admissions at Jenderal Soedirman University is proven to have occurred,” said Lalu Hadrian on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
The statement was made after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested Akhmad Sodiq for his alleged involvement in arranging new student admissions.
Lalu Hadrian reminded that all student selection processes must prioritise objectivity and transparency. Admission mechanisms must also be accountable and assess prospective students’ achievements, not personal connections or ability to pay.
While respecting the presumption of innocence and the ongoing legal process at the KPK, he assessed that the case could serve as evaluation material for improving the new student admission system, particularly through the independent pathway.
“This issue must not damage public trust in higher education institutions,” he said.
House Commission X of the DPR RI, he said, will summon the relevant ministry, namely the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek). The summons aims to seek an explanation regarding the government’s steps to strengthen the governance of student selection at state universities (PTN).
The move is considered important because House Commission X of the DPR RI has just completed the Working Committee on New Student Admission Selection. The working committee produced a number of recommendations to improve the student selection system in the future.
Previously, the KPK named Unsoed Rector Akhmad Sodiq along with five other individuals as suspects in alleged corruption related to new student admissions on Friday (21/8).
“Based on the sufficiency of evidence and in accordance with the provisions of Article 90 of the new Criminal Procedure Code regarding the determination of suspects, the KPK has named six people as suspects,” said Acting Director of Investigation at the KPK Achmad Taufik Husein at the KPK’s Red and White Building in Jakarta on Friday.
