Deputy Chairman of the House Commission X, Lalu Hadrian, has expressed profound concern over the incident that led to a student’s death during a learning practical activity. Lalu assessed that the incident must serve as a serious warning.

“This event serves as a serious reminder that learning activities, particularly those involving experiments or engineering projects, must prioritise safety aspects as the utmost priority,” Lalu stated to reporters on Friday (10/4/2026).

“Science education indeed encourages creativity and innovation, but it must not neglect strict safety standards,” he continued.

According to him, the incident indicates gaps in supervision, risk assessment, and safety procedures within educational units. He stressed the need for strict oversight of practical activities that have potential hazards.

“Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory safety and field practices need to be reinforced and made mandatory references in all schools,” he said.

This PKB politician also requested the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) to conduct a thorough evaluation of project-based learning implementation in schools. He emphasised that innovation must still be encouraged, but within the framework of safety.

“As a note, I urge the Ministry of Education to immediately conduct a comprehensive evaluation of project-based learning practices in schools, including the preparation of national guidelines on student experiment safety,” he stated.

“Additionally, it is important to enhance teachers’ capacity in risk management and ensure adequate supervision in every practical activity,” he added.

Previously, a ninth-grade student at SMP Islamic Center Siak, Riau, died during a science practical at school. The victim, initials MA (15), died due to an explosion from a homemade 3D-printed gun.

Siak Police Resort’s Criminal Investigation Chief, AKP Raja Kosmos Parmulais, revealed that the fatal incident occurred around 10:30 WIB. At that time, the school was conducting a science practical exam for ninth-grade students.

“During the practical, there were five student groups, and each group consisted of nine students. This was a science practical exam for IPA students,” said Raja Kosmos, quoted from detikSumut, Wednesday (8/4).

Before the practical, the victim asked his group mates to stay away. This was because the victim was demonstrating his science project, a homemade 3D-printed gun that he made himself.

“The victim took a position as the demonstrator and fired the 3D-printed weapon he made. It was during this firing that the explosion of the homemade 3D-printed gun occurred,” said Raja Kosmos.
