House Commission VII Urges Public Broadcasters to Correct Hoaxes Weekly

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chair of House Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo, has requested three state-owned broadcasting institutions—TVRI, RRI, and ANTARA—to collaborate with the Government Communication Agency (Bakom) to correct hoaxes on a weekly basis. She stated that the current information landscape is in a post-truth era, a situation she finds concerning because it often leads the younger generation to accept raw information without conducting research. “This situation means the country cannot be productive or work optimally if we have to deal with disinformation and hoaxes every day,” Rahayu said during a meeting with public broadcasting institutions at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Wednesday. “Yet no one checks whether it is true or not, and there is no source for the quotation,” she added. Therefore, she urged these broadcasting institutions to also work on identifying hoaxes and disinformation, positioning themselves as the frontline in ensuring the public receives accurate information. She emphasised that corrections to hoaxes must be carried out consistently, noting that such false information can be extremely dangerous. “Given that TVRI, RRI, and ANTARA are government publication outlets, it is crucial for them to be at the forefront,” she said.
