House Commission V Urges Ministry and KAI to Conduct Comprehensive Evaluation of Level Crossings
Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has requested that the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) conduct a comprehensive evaluation of all railway level crossings in Indonesia. This thorough evaluation is deemed necessary to enhance the safety of road users and railway travel.
Danang Wicaksana Sulistya, Head of the Gerindra Party faction in Commission V, stated that the initial step must be an inventory of all level crossing points to ascertain the actual field conditions and the risk level of each location. βThe Ministry of Transportation together with PT KAI must inventory all crossing points so that the conditions, risk levels, and appropriate solutions for each location are known,β Danang said on Saturday.
He assessed that the results of this inventory should form the basis for long-term policy regarding the handling of level crossings in various regions. For crossings with high traffic density and accident risk, Danang suggested the government consider constructing infrastructure such as flyovers or underpasses to eliminate the potential for conflict between train travel and road users.
For crossings that continue to operate at grade, Danang requested improvements, including an evaluation of the elevation of the tracks and road surface. He also called for a comprehensive review of the completeness of signage, early warning systems, crossing gates, lighting, and the visibility distance for motorists approaching the railway line. Danang emphasised that safety must be the top priority in managing railway crossings, requiring synergy between the central government, local governments, PT KAI, and other stakeholders.
