House Commission V Pushes for Public Transport Audit to Prevent Repeat of Krapyak Bus Disaster
House of Representatives Commission V Deputy Chairman Syaiful Huda has responded to the naming of the director and driver of bus operator PO Cahaya Trans as suspects following the fatal crash that killed 16 people at the Krapyak Toll Exit in Semarang, Central Java. Huda expressed hope that the incident could serve as a catalyst for comprehensive reform.
"First and foremost, we appreciate all the corrective measures taken in handling this traffic accident, including improvements in law enforcement," Huda said when contacted on Thursday (19/2/2026).
Huda called for a thorough evaluation of public transport operations across Indonesia to ensure such a deadly incident is never repeated.
"In light of the findings from this accident that claimed 16 lives, I believe this must become a moment for comprehensive reform of our traffic management system, particularly our public transport," he said.
The PKB party central board chairman urged the Ministry of Transport to ensure all public transport fleets are properly audited. He noted that the government needs to address these issues ahead of the Idul Fitri 1447 H homecoming period.
"Given all the findings following the forensic results, including field discoveries such as the failure to conduct proper ramp checks on all our public transport vehicles, we are asking the Ministry of Transport to ensure that all public transport fleet units are properly audited, that ramp checks are conducted thoroughly, and so on — especially with Lebaran approaching," Huda said.
"This is perhaps unfinished business that has not previously received full attention regarding the auditing of public transport operations, including ramp checks. We hope that despite the various challenges on the ground, the Ministry of Transport will give this serious attention. At the very least, the Lebaran homecoming season should be used as a moment for comprehensive reform, and there is still time," he added.
The fatal crash at the Krapyak Toll Exit interchange in Semarang has now reached a turning point in its investigation. Semarang Metropolitan Police have named PT Cahaya Pariwisata Transportasi Director Ahmad Warsito, bus driver Gilang Ihsan Faruq (22), and counterfeit licence makers Herry Soekirman and Mustafa Kamal as suspects.
Semarang Metropolitan Police Chief Commissioner M Syahduddi said there had been violations of standard operating procedures, namely that the driver Gilang had been using a forged public B1 driving licence. He said Ahmad, as the company owner, had failed to provide any training to the driver.
"The procedure was simply that the driver could park the bus in the garage, and he was then immediately ordered to operate the bus carrying passengers on the Bogor-Yogyakarta route without any prior testing," he said.
Furthermore, suspect Ahmad had also failed to equip the bus with safety features as required by Ministry of Transport regulations, including the absence of seatbelts on passenger seats.
Syahduddi stated that the driving licence held by Gilang was recorded as having been issued by the Padang Police Traffic Unit. Upon verification, the licence under Gilang's name was found to be unregistered at the Padang Police licensing centre.
"Forensic laboratory test results confirm that the public B1 driving licence in the name of GIF is non-identical, meaning it is a different printed product," said Syahduddi.
