Makassar (ANTARA) — House of Representatives Commission IX member Ashabul Kahfi, together with the Head of the Makassar Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BBPOM) Yosef Dwi Irwan, visited Maricayya Market to ensure that food products being sold are safe for consumption.

“This visit aims to verify current food prices whilst ensuring the safety of food products sold at the market,” said Ashabul in Makassar on Saturday.

According to him, monitoring traditional markets is a routine activity carried out during the holy month of Ramadan and ahead of major religious holidays.

During the working visit, Commission IX members inspected vendor stalls and engaged in direct dialogue regarding the prices and quality of staple goods available at the market.

Beyond monitoring food availability and prices, Commission IX paid special attention to the safety of products circulating in the market.

During the inspection, the lawmakers urged BBPOM Makassar to continue strengthening oversight of the distribution of potentially hazardous products, including unlicensed cosmetics and traditional herbal medicines sold within the market premises.

Ashabul stated that although the majority of food in traditional markets is generally fit for consumption, unlicensed products remain a primary concern.

The inspection at Maricayya Market reflects the synergy between legislative oversight and food safety authorities in ensuring safe consumption and stabilising staple commodity prices amid rising public demand during the holy month of Ramadan.

The measure is expected to strengthen consumer protection whilst maintaining micro-economic stability at traditional trading centres.
