House Commission III Warns Against Potential Abuse of Power in Asset Forfeiture Bill

The House of Representatives’ (DPR) Commission III held a public hearing with the Indonesian Advocates Congress (KAI) and academics to discuss the Asset Forfeiture Bill. Chairman Habiburokhman addressed concerns about potential loopholes that could lead to abuse of power in the legislation. He stated that the commission is seeking as much input as possible from the public regarding the asset forfeiture mechanism. “We understand that this Asset Forfeiture Law is something new, completely new for us, unlike the revision of other laws such as the Criminal Procedure Code or the Criminal Code,” Habiburokhman said at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday. He acknowledged the public debate surrounding the bill, particularly warnings to be cautious in its drafting to avoid creating opportunities for power abuse. The Gerindra Party politician noted that while there is strong spirit behind the bill, the commission must ensure the law’s wording does not inadvertently allow for misuse. “We must not let our good intentions become a political tool or a tool for rogue law enforcement officials,” he added.
