Jakarta (ANTARA) - Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has urged the police to respond more swiftly to public reports to prevent acts of vigilante justice.

Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the DPR RI, Ahmad Sahroni, stated that acts of vandalism, involvement of violence, and vigilante justice by the public have recently become rampant.

“This phenomenon is evident from various incidents in several regions, including firecracker-throwing actions and attacks on parties suspected of committing legal violations,” Sahroni said in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday.

He stated that vigilante actions would not occur if the police quickly investigate reports.

According to him, vigilante actions cannot be justified, but they are sometimes caused by public frustration due to the authorities’ lack of responsiveness. The public is already angry about reported criminal acts, but they are not immediately followed up.

Even if there is negligence or even agreements or deals by rogue elements with criminals, Sahroni continued, various actions occur, such as vandalism, firecracker throwing, and vigilante justice.

He encouraged the police to be more responsive in handling reports and to involve the public who have information related to a crime, so that investigations can proceed quickly.

“I urge the authorities to be quick to respond in following up on public reports because public reports greatly assist the performance of the authorities,” said the chairman of the commission handling law, human rights, and security.

Thus, there must be strong synergy so that law enforcement runs effectively and the situation remains conducive.

One recent vigilante phenomenon occurred when two motorcycle theft suspects became targets of the public after their actions were uncovered in Pedes Subdistrict, Karawang Regency, West Java, resulting in one of the theft suspects dying.

Karawang Police Resort Public Relations Head Ipda Cep Wildan in Karawang on Monday (9/3) stated that the incident occurred in Sukarela Hamlet, Kertamulya Village, Pedes Subdistrict, Karawang, on Monday around 09:00 WIB. A video recording of the mob frenzy incident circulated widely on social media.

Cep Wildan acknowledged that the video recording of the “mob frenzy” incident was related to motorcycle theft suspects in the Pedes Subdistrict, Karawang area.

After receiving information from the public, members of the on-duty unit of the Criminal Investigation Unit and SPK of Pedes Police Sector immediately went to the scene to secure the situation and evacuate two people suspected to be motorcycle thieves who had previously been secured and assaulted by the public.

The officers then evacuated both suspected perpetrators to Karawang General Hospital for medical treatment.
