House Commission III Urges BNN to Bolster Prevention and Rehabilitation After Uncovering 3.37 Tonnes of Cannabis

The success of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in uncovering the smuggling of approximately 3.37 tonnes of cannabis from an international network originating in Thailand has drawn appreciation from House of Representatives Commission III. Nevertheless, the House reminded that this major seizure should serve as a gateway to strengthening the overall narcotics eradication strategy. Muhammad Rahul, Head of the Commission III working group from the Gerindra Party faction, stated that uncovering the transnational network is a strategic achievement in efforts to protect the public from the threat of narcotics distribution. “I extend my highest appreciation to BNN Chief Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto and all BNN personnel, the Director General of Customs and Excise, and the police elements involved in this joint operation. Uncovering an international network with evidence of around 3.37 tonnes is a very strategic achievement,” he said on Thursday, 2 July 2026. Rahul assessed that the success is not limited to the seizure of evidence, but also demonstrates the authorities’ capability in dismantling the increasingly organised working patterns of international narcotics syndicates. According to him, the use of official import routes, containers, suitcases, and cardboard boxes as smuggling methods proves that narcotics networks continue to adapt, meaning law enforcement must also enhance their intelligence and surveillance capabilities. “This success shows the authorities’ ability to read crime patterns, conduct intelligence gathering, document analysis, shipment monitoring, and carry out measured enforcement. This is not just about seizing evidence, but also cutting the distribution chain before the narcotics circulate in the community,” he said. Rahul also assessed that the operation’s success reflects good coordination between the BNN, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, and the police in handling transnational narcotics crime. However, he cautioned that this achievement should not lead to complacency. He stated that the strengthening of the Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (P4GN) programme must continue sustainably. “Commission III believes the BNN will not stop at this operational success. This achievement should instead become a momentum to strengthen the implementation of P4GN more comprehensively, sustainably, and in an integrated manner, from prevention, eradication, and rehabilitation aspects to community empowerment,” he concluded.
